Carthage, the historic
An emblematic symbol of Tunisia, this historic city has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since July 27, 1979, and welcomes nearly a million visitors every year.
Founded around 814 BC, Carthage was the hub of one of the most important civilizations of antiquity, and one of the greatest commercial, cultural and military powers in the Mediterranean. It was thus positioned as Rome’s main rival for the domination of the region.
Today’s ruins, such as the Punic ports, Antonin’s baths and the great amphitheatre, bear witness to the city’s glorious past and its remarkable influence on the entire region.
